Whitney L Anderson · Mosaic collage artist · Duke University, B.A. Fine Arts
Mosaic collage portraits that breathe life into little squares.
I'm Whitney L Anderson, a Duke fine arts graduate who hand-cuts thousands of squares from recycled magazines and places them one by one until a face looks back at you. Custom portrait commissions and original collage art, 10 to 50 hours per piece, made by hand in Denver and collected nationwide.
I believe what makes me a successful artist is often a paradox of mindsets: whimsical and free thinking with my ideas, yet disciplined and commanding to execute those ideas.
I spend countless hours on my art. From conception to completion, my mind is always calculating the next move to bring everything I visualize to life, one hand-cut square at a time.
My creative mission is to consistently move toward new, challenging work. I believe that is what invites you to see beyond the art and into my soul, as it in turn touches your own.

Every big portrait starts as a pencil sketch on a blank sheet. Then I cut and place tiny pieces of magazine, one by one, until the face looks back at me. Drag the slider to scrub through my Morgan Freeman portrait.

Good questions
Custom portrait commission FAQ
How long does a custom collage portrait take?
The cutting alone takes 10 to 50 hours depending on size and subject. Most commissions are ready in about [__] weeks from your deposit.
What photos should I send?
Clear, well-lit photos where I can see the eyes. A few angles help. For Memory Mosaics, mail me the paper you'd like included.
How does it ship?
Each piece is sealed and dried for 24 hours, then rolled and shipped to you to mount and frame. Prefer it ready to hang? I offer full framing too.
Can I see your work in person?
Yes! Visit my showroom studio in Denver by appointment, or see pieces at Integral Threads in the Denver Design District and Gary Riggs Gallery in Breckenridge.
Do you take deposits?
Yes, a deposit holds your spot on my calendar. I only take a few commissions each season so every one gets my full attention.

About the artist · Mosaic collage artist & author
Hi, I'm Whitney L Anderson!
I was always a blank, white slate kid. I never liked coloring books or tracing. Give me a piece of paper and a pencil and that was my whole day.
A Duke University fine arts graduate, today I make contemporary realism with a flair of pop-culture nostalgia, entirely by hand. I call myself old school, raw and a purist: no mixed media, no tech shortcuts, just thousands of hours of practice and a lot of magazines.
